New Zealand wicket-keeper batsman BJ Watling was ruled out of the second and final Test against England after he failed to recover from a back injury.

England vs New Zealand: The second test match is being played between England and New Zealand. The first Test played between the two teams at Lord's was a draw. 


Disturbing news broke for New Zealand just ahead of the second Test. New Zealand wicket-keeper batsman BJ Watling was ruled out of the second and final Test against England after failing to recover from a back injury.


Watling could not fully recover from the back pain and was forced to miss the second Test. This injury has troubled Watling before. Although it had improved in the last 24 hours, it has not improved enough to be able to play behind the wicket in the second Test.


New Zealand Cricket (NZC) said in a statement: "New Zealand wicket-keeper batsman BJ Watling has been ruled out of the second Test against England due to unrecoverable back pain. 


Watling has now been replaced by Wellington Firebirds wicketkeeper-batsman Tom Blundell. Will play the role of wicketkeeper for the sixth time in the 11th Test. The second Test between England and New Zealand is being played in the presence of 18000 spectators. England won the toss and decided to bat first in this match.


Watling will retire from cricket after the World Test Championship (WTC) final against India on June 18. 35-year-old Watling has played 74 Tests and 28 ODIs for New Zealand so far.


Watling was quoted as saying by NZC, "It is the right time. It has been a great honor to represent New Zealand, and especially wearing Test baggies. Test cricket is the pinnacle of the game and I like to come out in white with the boys." Love every minute.


He said, "After five days I will miss sitting with the team with a beer in a changing form. I have played with some great players and made many good teammates. I have been helped a lot along the way for which I will always be grateful." " Watling is only the ninth wicket-keeper batsman to score a double century in Test cricket. He scored his first double century against England.
