The Euro Cup was started in 1960. Its 60 years were completed in 2020. But due to Corona, the tournament had to be postponed till 2021. In such a situation, to celebrate the completion of 60 years and to honor the tradition associated with it, UEFA also named the championship to be held in 2021 as Euro 2020.

Amidst the coronavirus, there was doubt about whether the European Football Championship, which was postponed last time, will be held this time as well. But the good thing is that Euro 2020 will start from June 11 as per the schedule. 

However, for the first time in the 60-year history of the tournament, the matches will be held in 11 different cities. But there is a lot of discussion about why the European Championship, which is being held in 2021, is being called Euro 2020. The story behind it is quite interesting.

Euro 2020 was to be held only last year. But due to Coronavirus, it had to be postponed for a year. However, only after this, it is being called Euro 2020. The decision was taken by the UEFA Executive Committee after internal review and discussion with several stakeholders.

Change of tournament name would have been a waste of goods: UEFA

In a statement issued by UEFA, it has been said that Euro 2020 will remind people how the whole football family came together to combat the situation created by the coronavirus pandemic. This is in line with UEFA's resolve and commitment that we will not generate excess waste at Euro 2020.

Because a lot of branded stuff related to the Euro Cup had been made even before the tournament was postponed last year. In such a situation, if the name of the tournament was changed, then the goods would have to be made anew and it would have been a kind of waste.

Euro 2020 will be organized in 11 cities

Initially, UEFA had decided to organize Euro 2020 in 12 cities. Later it was reduced to 11 cities. This time matches will be held in London, Glasgow, Copenhagen, Seville, Budapest, Amsterdam, Rome, Munich, Baku, Bucharest, and St. Petersburg. The final of the tournament will be held at Wembley Stadium in London.
